MingGe's first day in Kennebunk, ME

We made it!

I have not been posting the last few days because it has been a whirlwind!

On Friday, MingGe was sworn in as a US citizen, along with about 10-15 other adoptees. Although it was very short and very anticlimatic (compared to the paper chase we have lived and breathed over the past year) there was not a dry eye in the house. We were in and out in about 1/2 hour and went immediately to the train station.

The train ride from Guangzhou to Hong Kong took about 2 1/2 hours. Since the train left at 4:50, we were able to catch some daylight and enjoy the views. It was amazing and I think John enjoyed both of our train rides more than any other attraction we visited in China.

I know Hong Kong is now part of China, but we still had to go through a customs process upon entering the City of Kowloon. I think it is something like Puerto Rico which is owned by the US but still has its own customs process.

We took a car to the Disney Hollywood Hotel and checked in. The kids were very excited and MingGe quickly became a Mickey Mouse fan. The Disney imagineers have been to work in Hong Kong. Like Florida, there are "hidden" Mickeys everywhere (three circles of the size of Mickey's heads and ears) - the lights, bedspreads, bathrooms, floors, elevator buttons, everywhere. MingGe wanted to show us every one!

On Sat, we went to the park. It is smaller is size and scale then Florida, but is the same idea. There is a Main Street, with bakery, stores, City Hall, and a restaurant at the end. FL has three restaurants in the same area, by comparison. You can walk through the castle to Fantasyland but the castle is about 1/3 to 1/2 the size. MingGe Jack and I went on Dumbo first. Dad took pictures. I have spent several hours trying to retrieve them off the camera we got in China, but I have not had any luck yet. This was actually special for Mama too because I have never been on Dumbo in the US. The lines are always too long! MingGe loved this.

Jack and MingGe were one of the first guests of the day and received a Star Guest sticker and a certificate with their names on it - very similar to the Year of a Million Dreams Magical Moments certificates that were awarded in the US. Throughout the day they received about 50 other stickers with the the Disney characters! MingGe would march them right over to Baba for safekeeping in his bag!

We went on Winnie the Pooh next. At this point MingGe really started to get what this was about and would run to the next attraction. Asking to go on everything, regardless of the age or subject matter!

Later in the afternoon, we went back to the hotel for a dip in the pool. It was a little chilly so we had to stay inside. MingGe was not interested in venturing off the steps with Jack or I, but she was very content to sit on the entry stairs and giggle and laugh with Jack. After an excellent International Buffet dinner at Chef Mickey's we all fell fast asleep.

On Sunday we went back to the park to visit the attractions that we missed on Sat. MingGe really had a thing for Mickey Mouse himself at this point and managed to get her father to buy a good sized Mickey stuffed animal in a leather jacket and jeans. We like to call him NYC Mickey. She definitely has a thing for black.

Sun afternoon the outside pool was open. The pool had a huge zero entry area, so MingGe was able to swim around with her hands on the bottom and jump in play in depths that she was comfortable with. We had a wonderful time. She loved it when Jack came over so she could splash him!

Since we all enjoyed Chef Mickey's so much the night before, we ate there again. The only problem was it did not open until 6. We were done swimming by 4:30 and MingGe was hungry! Dad to the rescue again. As we started to melt down, Dad brought MingGe to the lounge for some chicken wings. She was a new person and saved but one wing for brother Jack. We had another great meal at Chef Mickey's including a birthday card and song from the staff to celebrate John's birthday. MingGe knows the words to Happy Birthday and continued to serenade the entire restaurant during dinner. Although there were some verses for John, there were many for MingGe. She was adorable.

We had to leave the hotel by 7:30 on Mon for our long trip back to the US, so it was early to bed for the Daley's on Sun night.

Our flight back was LOOOONG. The leg from Hong Kong to JFK was 15 hours and 9 minutes. MingGe was unbelievable. She slept, played, ate and was really better than anyone could expect. She was rewarded when we got to NYC with McDonalds chicken nuggets and fries. She was very happy and did not complain when we waited 2 hours and then got on another plane for Boston. Man, are we lucky.

She, John, Jack and I all talked and stayed awake the whole ride home from Boston (1.5 hours). When we arrived, MingGe and Jack ran from room to room. MingGe was very excited. She met the cats and was a little scared at first. She actually gave Gabby a little pat before the night was over. By tonight she was not crossing the room to the other side to pass, but she still did not want any of them sleeping on her bed!

Reality and being overtired hit at bedtime. MingGe was scared and was upset for about 15 minutes. Per her request, Jack slept with her and Baba comforted her until she fell asleep. We are so proud of our little girl and her big brother Jack. They really were amazing during our big adventure.

Coming up tomorrow, our first day in Kennebunk - Walshes, Walshes and Walshes!

Thursday Morning - Guangzhou - Phone Calls Galore

After MingGe woke up Dad turned on the computer.  We immediately got a video call, via Skype, from the Walshes.  No sooner did we answer than Uncle Jamie, Aunt Linda and Reagan called, followed within seconds by Auntie Ali!!!!!

John was so excited to talk to someone from his family that they could barely get a word in edgewise!  It was so great to see them too!  We will have to continue to use Skye when we get back to the US.

The Walshes showed MingGe their new baby chick - Chic Fil A.

The Daleys from New York showed MingGe their new cat and the Zeas showed MingGe their dog. 

It was so nice to actually speak with and see some of our friends and family back in the US.  We miss everyone very much.

I am not sure she knows what to think about our fascination with animals.  For many here it is dinner!  Actually, one of the specialties in Guangzhou is pigeon, mmmm.  We were actually commenting as MingGe spilled some chips in one of the squares in the Forbidden City that in the US we would be surrounded by pigeons.  They are noticeably missing from the parks and squares in China.  Things that make you say hmmm hmmmm hmmm.

Tomorrow we check out of our hotel and go to the US Consulate.  MingGe will be sworn in as a US citizen tomorrow afternoon, March 13, around 3:30 PM!  We will go to the train station directly from the consulate to catch our train to Hong Kong.  We will spend three nights there before heading home on John's birthday - Monday, March 16.  John is very excited to have a 36 hour birthday this year, since we will be traveling east.  It is certainly one he will never forget as he brings home the best present of all - his little girl.

MingGe's First Plane Trip

I cannot believe how well MingGe did on the flight over.  She ate, drew pictures, read and took a nap.  She did not like her seatbelt but did wear it for takeoff and landing, as instructed.  When we were on our final descent and I said we're on our way down she shook her little head and said no and pointed up at the ceiling!  She did not want to go down.

Our guide Bob met us at the airport.  He took us to the Holiday Inn Shifu.  It is right in the city with one of their major shopping streets right outside the door.  Lots of restaurants and stores - plenty to see!

On Wed we had to go to the clinic for MingGe's physical exam.  This is required for the consulate.  She had to get 4 shots?!?!?!  Arghhh.  Under the old rules, you had to submit a notarized affidavit that you would get the required shots when you got to the US.  Under the new Hague rules, they must all be taken before being issued a Visa.  Since they are required for school, I am not sure why they put the kids through this.  MingGe, of course, knew exactly what was going on.  As soon as we entered the clinic she started shaking her head and wimpering )-:

She watched everything and did not cry until the last one.  It must have hurt.  Her arm is still a little sore today.  She also slept almost 12 hours last night - which may have been a direct result of the shots.

After the clinic we walked back through the animal market.  There we saw lots of cats, dogs, fish, etc... Jack was enthralled with the scorpions - good soup stock - turtles, eels, frogs and snakes.  MingGe is very timid with the animals and not at all fond of the slimy ones.  Wait until she goes to camp and the boys are catching buckets full of toads!

We also walked to a playground on Shaiman Island.  Jack and MingGe played on the equipment and got an ice cream for the walk home.  If you are all worried that I am going to spoil my little girl I do have my limits  - no more than 3 ice creams per day!?!?!?!  Actually after getting her shots she could have had anything.  Mama couldn't even go in - Dad and Jack had to hold her hand and watch.  I was the same way with Jack.  I always had to leave the room when it came time for the shots.  Some things never change!

We decided to eat in the hotel this evening because MingGe announced at 4:45 "I'm Hungry"!

When she sets her mind to it we have figured out we need to take care of things pretty quickly or things get ugly!  She and Jack had a great time visiting the buffet numerous times.  

Even though I was dreading the medical exam, MingGe, once again, was a trooper.   Except for that part, it was a great day.  MingGe has been singing, laughing and playing like a typical 4 year old.  I know she still misses Auntie Migyeong and Auntie Elaine, she seems to be adjusting the the crazy family she has just joined.

Guangzhou and Ali

We are heading to Guangzhou today to finalize the adoption on the US side.  This will be MingGe's first plan ride.  Bringing lots of gum, hoping her ears will take it.

Before heading out we got a video call on the computer from Auntie Ali!!!

Boy was MingGe excited.  She played, brought items to show her and laughed and spoke to her, Antonia and Niko.  She even said bye bye and blew kisses to her!  I told Ali I am now number 8 in the pecking order behind, Jack, Baba, the 3 cats and her!

We did buy a cheap camera last night, so I will try to post more pictures when we get to Guangzhou.

Beijing Day 3 MingGe and the Market

We started the day touring the Forbbidden City.  It took about 1.5 hours just to walk from one end of the City to the other.  There were large halls, one for resting before important ceremonies, oe for dressing, one for the empresses, etc...  Since we had two children, we will read more about it later.  There is alot of symbolism and history, but the kids were more interested in running and skipping their way through the squares.   MingGe only wanted Jack's hand and she was very quiet, but she was running and skipping, so  think she was ok.

In the afternoon we visited the pearl market.  This was amazing.   Floors of pearls just tied together in big bundles.  Of course all of the ladies took a big interest in MingGe.  She was very interested in the girls making the jewelry and the tools, she got some gems, a pearl necklace a small jewelry pouch and a silk purse as gifts from different ladies she befriended.  Baba bought MingGe and I some beautiful pearls.  We will save MingGe's to give her on her 16th birthday. We also bought some beautiful gifts for the women in our family.

After touring the market MingGe was giggling and happy.  We went back to the hotel and she played with all of us!  She let Mama help open things and draw pictures with her.  We went out for noodles and an ice cream for dessert.  MingGe was joyful and singing.  

Did I mention she knows all the words to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?  I am sure we have Auntie Migyeong to thank for that one.  She was also singing Old MacDonald.

Beijing Day 2 The Great Wall

In typical John fashion, he befriended a man at the hotel from the Ukraine.  This gentleman travels to China several times a year for work.  He is a toy salesman.  Anyway, he arranged for a car and guide to take us to the Great Wall, Mutianyu.  Badaling is the more common destination for tourists and John had been there on his last trip.  He said it was teeming with very aggressive vendors and wall to wall people, no pun intended.  Parts of the wall were actually crowded.  Mutianyu on the other hand is known for it's more natural setting and beautiful vistas.  It was spectacular.  There were very few people.  We took a cable car up and down, just hiking a short while on top of the wall from tower to tower.  We also tried calling Auntie Ali because we thought she might be the only family member still awake at 10:30 PM!

Our guide was Jennifer.  MingGe took a step back today and grabbed on to Jennifer for dear life.  It may be that she was also scared.  She has never been in a cable car and some of the steps on the wall were half her size.  She was not interested in doing anything but leaving.  After taking some pictures Jennifer, MingGe and I sent John and Jack on a short hike.  We waited on a scenic overview where the cable car station was located.  It may have just been a language attraction.  MingGe understands much of what we are saying, but can not talk back so I am sure it is comforting to be able to have a conversation with someone!

After the Great Wall we went to a Cloisine factory.  They walked us from room to room and we could see each step in the process. A small vase the size of a water bottle takes about 2 weeks to complete!  I was not a big fan of this style of pottery or jewelry but I am glad we stopped there.  It was very interesting and I liked many of their designs.  We also enjoyed an authentic Chinese lunch at their restaurant.  It was great.

The drive back to the City was about 1.5 hours.  MingGe did take a nap in the van!

Back in Beijing we went to the "Blue Zoo".  I was expecting a very small aquarium with some fish tanks.  Boy was I wrong.  It was a great aquarium.  The best part was a 300 m moving conveyer belt that took you through a huge fish tank under arched windows.  There was many species of fish and sea life.  It was awesome.

MingGe turned into the happy girl that we have seen over the past week.  She let me zip her coat and hold her hand on the stairs.  When we went back to the hotel she played with Jack and I like before.  Two steps forward!

We went for dinner at a rest right near the hotel.  It was great.  MingGe likes shrimp so we ordered Shrimp fried rice.  She could not resist even though she was getting tired.  Back at the hotel we played for a short time before hitting the hay at 7.

Although we took a step back at the beginning of the day we ended on a happy note.  As she and Jack held hands and skipped back tot he hotel, John and I looked at each other and said "thank God" at the same time.

Tomorrow we will be visiting the Forbidden City, Tianamen (sp?) Square and the Pearl Market.  

Beijing Day 1 Summer Palace Beijing Zoo

MingGe was sad today.  She would not let Mama do much except brush her hair.  Jack, however, could do no wrong.  We went to the Summer Palace and she held on to Jack's hand the whole time.  She also sat with / on top of him in the taxis.  MingGe enjoyed an ice cream and climbed all the way up to the Buddha temple.  No pictures to post for this amazing site because we lost our camera later in the day )-:  Baba was ok.  Although she was not overly affectionate to him and Jack was clearly number 1, John could help with certain things.  

We left the Palace and went to the Beijing Zoo.  MingGe was very excited to see the Pandas.  We saw at least 8 Pandas.  We ate lunch at the zoo.  Probably our worst meal of the trip so far but edible.  This is what I would expect if I visited a zoo in the states too!  We also viewed the lions, amphibian house, tapirs and misc birds and creatures.

After the zoo we went back to the hotel for a nap.  MingGe was not interested.

We decided to go out for Italian for dinner for a change.  Unfortunately we did not arrive at the restaurant until 6 and there was a short wait.  By the time we were seated and ordered it was 6:30.  MingGe was toast.  She refused to eat and laid on Jack's lap, then the floor.  Before we left she threw up.  Once we got in the cab she fell asleep on brother Jack.  When we got back to the room she was happy as a clam...  She went to sleep without a problem.  Considering this is the first day without seeing Aunti Migyeong, Auntie Elaine or Christina, I think she did very well.  No meltdowns, no crying...she just wasn't as happy and carefree as we have witnessed several times over the past week in Shenyang.  Lesson learned, MingGe really needs to eat around 5 and be back to her home by 6!

Pictures of Liaoning Mansion

We really enjoyed our stay here.  The service was outstanding.  After they saw John walk to get an English paper the first day, they had one delivered to our room each day.

When they saw John walk laundry to the cleaners they asked if there was a problem with their service.  John explained if he were only doing 5-6 items he would certainly have it done in the hotel, but we were having over 50 items done and it was cheaper outside the hotel.  We did use their service when Jack and MingGe wiped out and ended up in a black, muddy puddle.  We dropped off black clothes about 10:30 and they were delivered to our room by 5:00.  Beautifully pressed and clean!

Everyone knew Jack and MingGe's name and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

I like Cheese - Reflections on our first week in China

As we complete our first week in China I thought I would make some comments about our trip so far.  

1.  Everyone we have met has been extremely friendly and helpful.  

For example, MingGe has sensitive skin (like Mama) and needed some diaper rash cream.  John went down to the front desk.  They speak pretty good English, but how do you translate diaper rash cream?   After pointing to his butt and drawing a tube of cream, they asked him if he needed to go to the hospital!?!?!  LOL

When they finally figured out that it was for MingGe they grabbed him by the hand and walked him down the street to the pharmacy, helping him purchase some aloe.  The next morning, one of the ladies from the marketing department who had heard about our request also bought us a tube and brought it to our room.

2.  I was hoping to lose some weight in China but that is NOT going to happen.

We have totally enjoyed every meal we have had here.  The only thing I really miss is cheese.  Dairy is not as common here as the states, probably due to the refrigeration requirement.  Even the water and soda coolers here are turned off at night.  Most drinks are served warm.

3.  Have a mentioned the beds?   I believe the Liaoning Mansion is a 4 star hotel.  We had a suite which was very large, even by Western standards.  The  living room had enough room to put a rollaway on one end and still be out of the way.  Our bedroom had a King bed which Jack, MingGe and I slept in.  I am not actually sure there it was a bed though - more like concrete with a sheet on it.  John decribed as a  boxsping with a sheet.  I don;t mind sleeping on the floor, so it was fine.  I am not sure Uncle Harry and Aunt Ali would have survived.  Not Sleep Number here!  I have heard this is the same of all authentic Chinese hotels.  Although we could have stayed at the InterContinental, I am glad we experienced a more tranditional hotel.

4.  Shenyang is a large city.  We will miss it.

Our hotel in Beijing is called the Luxury Serviced Residence.  And it is a residence.  It has two bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and second living room where I am now with a desk - also 2 bathrooms - hoorah!  It is two floors and furnished in Scandanavian style.  There are tall windows that span both floors and there are balconies in both bedrooms with spectacular views of  Beijing.  It is bigger than Elaine and Migyeong's apartment and actually bigger than most apartments in Portland Me or any other big city.  Did I mention that it is $100 per night with taxes and fees?  The larger hotels in Beijing like Marriott and Hilton are $250-300 per night, just for comparison.

I can't help but wonder what MingGe thinks though.  First we go from a suite to a huge apartment.  When we get to Guangzhou on Tues and check in to the room with two beds I am sure she is going to think - what's going on here???!?!?!

Today we are going to the Summer Palace and then to the zoo to see the Pandas.  I hope my little girl has a good day.

MingGe is a Brave Little Girl

We left Shenyang today.  Elaine and Migyeong hosted a lunch at the Green Restaurant in our honor.  It was amazing.  It is called the Green Restaurant because I think it is equivalant to an organic restaurant in the US.  You walked around a large fish tank about 100 feet long with buffets of dished prepared and set up all along the sides.  Each one had a number, including the tanks, and you place your order.  It was terrific.

However, the time I had come to dread was upon us.  I did not sleep the night before as I went through all the scenarios that would occur when we tried to leave.  MingGe is very smart and knew exactly what was going on.  She started to get upset in our dining room which was very far from the exit.  This place was the size of Super Walmart and we were in the back corner... We got her to the door because she had left her gift for Christina, our guide, in the van.  However at that point we had to pick her up and forcibly restrain her as she screamed for Auntie Migyeong.  It broke my heart.  

The good news is MingGe cried for about 2 minutes.  Mama on the other hand could not control herself.  I was so worried about my little girl and my heart was breaking for Migyeong.  When I finally pulled myself together, John lost it.  As we approached the train station we were sad to leave Shenyang but looking forward to our life with MingGe.

MingGe grabbed right on to Christina and would not let go.  She shot dirty looks at John and I the whole way to Beijing.  The train was beautifully clean and the ride was smooth.  It took 4 hours.  John just sat and stared at the countryside.  He totally enjoyed it.  Jack read - first time her had done homework since arriving in China - and watched a movie.  MingGe did sleep for about an hour.

When we arrived we grabbed a cab to our hotel.  As soon as we hit the lobby MingGe started to get upset and asked Christina to stay through dinner, then she would "send her off".  She helped us to the room and then agreed to walk us across the street to 7 Eleven to get some quick noodles for dinner.  By this time it was 6:30 and MingGe was tired, upset and very hungry.   MingGe threw up on the floor at 7 Eleven.  This is probably the 6th time she has been sick.  It is always when she is upset and she is fine immediately following.  Finally as we approached the door she started to melt down.  John picked her up and she would not let go of Christines fingers and was kicking.  I hugged and thanked Christina and we ran out the door.  MingGe cried for about 30 seconds.  When we got the room we made dinner and Jack and MingGe started playing.  They ran aroud screaming and laughing until 10 PM.  She was that happy, playful girl we had seen over the past two days!

She also called out to me several times tonight!  She had been calling Baba when she was wanted to show him sonething.  But she had not called for Mama until tonight!   We went to bed with a kiss and hopes that MingGe would be happy with our family!

MingGe is a Girly Girl!

Watch out Baba (Dad) MingGe will have you playing Barbies and dressing up in your best tutu before you know it!

The transformation of MingGe over just the past few days has been remarkable.  Let me tell you a few things about my little girl.  First, like all good parents, I must say she is very bright.  Did you know her name means "Bright One".  She wanted to go to breakfast in the morning and Jack was dragging his feet.  MingGe said, as clear as day, "Let's go Jack!"  

At dinner tonight the guide asked Jack in English how many dumplings he ate.  Jack said he had five and they were delicious.  MingGe said in Chinese "How come he had five and I only had one?"  Clearly this little girl understands alot more than we think she does!!!

When we get on any elevator and ask her to push a button, she selects the right one.  I guess we know colors and numbers!

What has really changed is how happy she has been over the past two days.  She sings as she is walking along, skips, giggles and plays tricks on Baba and Jack.   Although she misses Migyeong terribly, I think she is also growing fond of her new family.  At dinner tonight she told Migyeong she loved her new family but she misses her.  Her only meltdown today was after dinner.  We met Elaine, Migyeong and Tommy's family  for dinner at the Christian restaurant.  When we left MingGe was tired and she did not want to leave Auntie Migyeong.  She cried when we got in the cab for about 5 minutes.  She did fall asleep in the cab and went straight to bed when we got back to the hotel.    We are leaving tomorrow for Beijing and I do not know how it will go.  I am sure it will be harder on Migyeong than anything I can imagine.  She is such a nice soul and I am sure she knows MingGe will have a happy life full of love and endless possibilities in the US, but that does not make it any easier to say goodbye.  A visit next year is already planned, but boy does that seem a long way off.  

I've got to go back to sleep.  It is 4 AM and I am hoping to catch an hour or two more of sleep.

Shenyang Social Welfare Institute #1

After a terrific Breakfast where MingGe ran around the restaurant like a typical 4 year old, we headed to MingGe's orphanage.  She was so excited.  She packed her backpack with candy to give her friends and presents for her caregivers.

As far as orphanages go, I would give this one an A.  It is very clean and bright and the caregivers are nice and attentive.  I am not sure of the ratio of caregivers to children, but there always seemed to be plenty of adults around.  The children were very happy to see MingGe and also John.  Many of them recognized him from his previous trips.

However, when it was time for lunch, MingGe wanted to eat "out" instead of at the orphanage!

We took the van to what I would call electronics street.  There we purchased 30 DVDs for approximately $45.  This included titles like SlumDog Millionaire, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and 7 Pounds.  Jack also got the Indiana Jones series and all Harry Potter movies.  It was quite an experience and if half of the DVDs work it will still be a deal.  Jack has already watched one and MingGe also watched Toy Story.

After a quick stop at the scroll shop we headed back to the hotel.  MingGe spent some time with Migyeong before being delivered by the driver to us.  She took an hour nap before dinner.

Dinner was an experience.  We decided to go to one of the best jiaozi restaurants in Shenyang but they did not have a picture menu.  We had no idea what we were getting.  Soup first.  It was delicious!  Not too many bones either.   Seafood dumplings were great but MingGe had enough and Mama had to take her out of the restaurant.  

A quick trip to Sephora across the street and one vanity mirror later, she was happy again!  Did I mention that she insisted on wearing a dress and tights to the orphanage today, even though it was very cold?  Or that one of her favorite "presents" so far is the chapstick Dad found in his bag?  I think MingGe and Cousin Ruby are going to get along famously!

Our wonderful Monday night continued into a terrific Tuesday.  MingGe actually skipped at breakfast which someone had once told us was a sign of a happy child.  Breakfast is a buffet at the hotel and is very interesting.  They have fried eggs (signed Frig the Egg), toast and pastries/ yogurt.  But they also have a full buffet of dinner foods like noodles, meatballs, fish, cabbage, vegetables, and a full salad bar.  Jack had french fries with ketchup, pan fried dumplings, and wonton soup for breakfast today.  I have no idea what most of the things MingGe ate were, but the buffet makes it easy for her to point!

After breakfast we headed back to the Civil Affairs office.  Only two other families this morning and one had a little girl, previously adopted from China, who MingGe made friends with.  She was happy and curious this morning.  We had to then drive to the security building for pasport paperwork.  No problem sitting for pictures this time.  After that Christina, our guide, and our driver took us to an awesome restaurant.  It has a long history - over 100 years and was fantastic.   We all tried dried bamboo stir fry!  We also had a stuffed bread that was different.  Also plenty of meats with different sauces.  As you can tell by the pictures, there was no shortage of food!

We were hoping MingGe would take a nap so had some down time at the hotel.  No such luck.  We ended up walking to the store and found some play dough.  MingGe really liked this and we all had fun playing until the big surprise for MingGe - Aunti Migyeong and Elaine came to the hotel for dinner.  MingGe was so happy to see them.  we played until she was hungry and then went to the "Hot Pot" restaurant.  I will describe this later, but even before our food came MingGe was toast.  She was hungry and tired and ready for bed.  Even for Migyeong she was cranky.  We made it through dinner and got her home to the tub.  Then Migyeong left and MingGe cried for a few minutes before falling into a deep sleep.  We'll see how she makes out today.  We are heading to the orphanage to see her friends and caregivers.  Then an afternoon with Elaine and Migyeong at the shopping street!

BTW - Jack loves Shenyang!  He really is a city boy.

MingGe Monday Update

The last two days have been a blur.  What an experience.

MingGe is full of energy and very bright.  On Monday we figured out she knows many of her colors and some common words.  She also has a little independent streak.  We spent several hours at the Civil Affairs office.  It was several hours of waiting and tough on the adults who had no idea what the guides and officials were saying, so it must have been tough on the kids.  There were at least six different families in the same room with their kids, families and guides.  

We were very happy to meet Tommy from Texas along with his wife, three daughters and new son.  One of Tommy's daughters was adopted from China, so they knew the drill.  I think he met Elaine through his work with charitable organizations and Yahoo group but he had called me in the states before we left when we figured out we would be traveling at the same time. 

Towards the end of the morning we had to go down a few floors and get pictures taken for the official adoption paper.  MingGe was done and wanted nothing to do with it.  John had to grab her and carry her over - boy was she mad!  Tommy to the rescue - a pixie stick saved the day.  Yes, we resorted to sugar in a stick!

At that point we figured out that bribery works.  We took MingGe to KFC for lunch, as that is where she wanted to go for dinner Sun night with Elaine and Migyeong, but we made her go for Chinese food.  Jack has had KFC once in his life in the states, but we needed to cheer our little girl up!

After lunch the time change and early wakeup hit us.  Mama took a 4 hour nap, MingGe took a 3 hour nap and Jack took a 2 hour nap.  After that we saw a different girl.  She was so happy.  We took a walk to Tessco and grabbed some supplies.  MingGe also found a plastic tea set she could take in the tub.  We had dinner in the hotel and played in the room.  It was a great night!  MingGe went to bed without any problems and slept solidly all night!  

I should mention that the first night MingGe slept like a soldier - arms straight by her side.  Making sure not to touch brother Jack on one side or Mama on the other.  Mon night there were arms and legs everywhere!  At one point Jack woke me up and asked if I could get MingGe off him as he had to go to the bathroom and he did not want to wake her.

Observation of the day.  "Mom and Dad, I know why the cars are so skinny in China, that way they can drive on the sidewalk without hitting any buildings."

The roads are really a free for all and almost impossible to describe.  There are many cars and almost no rules.  If you are turning left when the light turns green, simply move directly into oncoming traffic so you block their access to move forward.  They will still try to go around you to the right, including going on the sidewalk, but if you are good you can block their path and continue your turn.  Sidewalks are a little bigger than NYC and are fair game.  People, bikes, motorscooters all fight for the right of way.  We have seen police.  They drive around with their lights on all the time, so it would be hard to tell if they wanted you to stop.  But this is not a problem, they do not stop anyone!  I think they are there only if someone gets into an accident that cannot be settled with a payment or I'm sure of there is a fatality!

We have MingGe!

We left Shanghai Sunday morning at 11:10, arriving in Shenyang at 1:10. Elaine was there to greet us as well as Christine, our guide and the two drivers. It was such an emotional moment to see Elaine through the glass when we arrived at baggage claim. It seems like we are family.

We dropped our bags at the Liaoning Mansion and made our way to Elaine and Migyeong's apartment. MingGe greeted us at the door. She had her bags packed and was very excited. She was a little shy but also playful. About 5:30 she told us it was time to eat. She normally eats at 4:30 so she was starving! We went to a great restaurant across from their apartment complex. We had a private room with lots of great food. We ate chun bing which is basically like soft tacos. You filled the wrap with any of the meats and veggie that were ordered. Everything is served on a big lazy susan on the middle of the table. We had pork, chicken, tofu, green beans, cabbage, bean sprouts. It was a great meal. By 7:00 we were done and so was MingGe. At that point she was tired and she realized she was not going to be with her Chinese mother. She did cry a little but we made a quick getaway. She fell asleep in the van on the way back to the hotel.
John carried her in but she woke up as we were entering the elevator. The poor little thing was scared and wanted Migyeong. She was really mad at us in the room and was upset for about 15 minutes. At that point she saw the tub. She wanted in with brother Jack and then with Mom. It calmed her down and she was fine for the rest of the night. She slept well but woke up early - about 5:45. We just got back from breakfast and are on our way to the Civil Affairs office

A Night in Shanghai

John, Jack and I ventured down to Naning Street for food and fresh air after our 24 hour trip.  The street has been turned into a pedestrian walkway and it was crowded with people.  It reminded me of Times Square.

We left the main thoroughfare and visited a tea shop.  We were invited to sit and have tea.  Chen Rong Shang made us five different kinds of tea.  I was partial to the green tea, Jack liked the sweetest one and John was partial to the Jasmine tea.  We did purchase two tea gifts from our gracious hosts.

After that we were getting hungry so we went in search of dumplings.  We actually saw someone eating exactly what we were looking for so we stopped him and asked him where he got them.  We do not know what kind of meat was being wrapped in the dough, but there was a long line, we watched them make them by the tray full and they were delicious.  I should also mention that our family of three ate dinner tonight for 9 yuan (there are 7-8 yuan / dollar so that's about $1.30).  John's REEB also cost 3 yuan or $.33.  Jack and I had water from the free executive lounge.  When we are a family of four we will have to get three orders!!  All I could think of was this is my girlfriend Linda's kind of town!

After dinner we explored the shops and walked down to the Bund.  The lights across the river were spectacular.  There were also boats and barges lit up.  One was a floating TV!   We grabbed a cab and headed back to the hotel.  Tomorrow is a big day.  Jack and I will meet MingGe in person for the first time!  We are excited and nervous.

REEB and Unidentified Fruit

Well I figured out how to get my pictures loaded!  Here is John with his first example of Chenglish this trip.  If you look closely you will see that the drink that he bought is "REEB" - also known as BEER in the US!

We were given a bowl of mystery fruits upon checkin.  Jack and John described the one pictured below with Jack as a cross between an orange and a peach.  Not sure what it is but they both had one!

We Made It

We made it to Shanghai. It is in the mid-forties and rained lightly as we taxied from the airport to the hotel. Our flights were on time and we had no problems getting through customs. We are staying at the Hilton. Since we are only here one night we decided to use Mom's Hilton points. The hotel is exactly what you would expect from a Hilton property. Beautiful executive lounge on the 38th floor with views of the Central Business District and the Bund.
Jack is in heaven because we have a king bed, which means we all get to sleep together (we only have a queen at home)!
The boys have gone for a walk to check out the neighborhood while I volunteered to get our electronics working and let everyone know we made it here. Our phones both have a strong signal but we do not plan on calling anyone unless there is an emergency - the rate is $2 / minute.
The only problem I have so far is I am unable to attach my pictures to blog at this point. I have downloaded them to the laptop, so hopefully we will figure that issue out when we get to Shenyang.
We're basically going to check out the city, eat and go to bed. Tomorrow is the big day and we will be leaving for the airport directly after breakfast.
We are all very excited to meet our little girl. We pray that she will like us!

MingGe We're On Our Way!

We leave Kennebunk, ME for China tomorrow morning at 3:30 AM!

MingGe will meet us at the airport in Shenyang on Sunday! We cannot wait. We are beyond excited.

We will post updates from China assuming we can get to the Internet!

Our schedule looks like this:
Leave Boston Fri, Feb 27 at 6:30 AM, Arrive Shanghai Sat, Feb 28 at 15:30.
Eating and sleeping one night in Shanghai.

Leave Pu Dong Airport Sun, Mar 1 at 11:10, Arrive Shenyang Sun, Mar 1 at 13:10.
MingGe will meet us at the airport!
This is where we will complete the Chinese side of the adoption.
Staying at the Liaoning Mansion in ShenYang.

On Sat, Mar 7 all four of us will take a high speed train from Shenyang to Beijing.
Three nights in Beijing at the Luxury Serviced Residence Beijing.

On Tues, Mar 10 we will fly from Beijing to Guangzhou.
This is where we will complete the US side of the adoption.
MingGe will be sworn in as a US citizen on Friday, March 13!!

Immediately following the swearing in ceremony we will take a train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. We will spend 2 days at Disney's Hollywood Hotel at Hong Kong Disneyland before flying back to Boston on Monday, March 16.

Thank You Migyeong!

MingGe is very fortunate to have Migyeong in her life. We are thankful for Migyeong’s love and support.

Waiting for TA

CCAA was closed last week for Chinese New Year.

We are patiently waiting for Travel Approval.

As soon as we get the call we will be requesting our Consulate Appointment. We are praying that we can leave next Thursday. If February 12 does not work out we will leave on February 19.

The wait is killing us but we can't wipe the smile off our faces. We are so happy to know that we will be with MingGe very soon. We pray every day that she will be happy with us and her transition is as smooth as possible.

Happy Birthday MingGe

Today is MingGe's 4th birthday.






We also had great news today from USCIS. Our I800 has been approved. It was just sent via overnight mail on Wednesday (waiting for LOA) so that is 3 business days! Thank you USCIS!! This is important because it is required to schedule our consulate appointment. Now as soon as we get Travel Approval from China we will be able to make our appointment and go. I am so happy!!

Elaine also let me know that MingGe's birthday package arrived safely. We sent her some stickers, birthday cards, including hand made ones from Jack and Ruby, as well as some hair elastics. They will bring it to MingGe tomorrow. I hope she has a great day.

LOA! LOA!! LOA!!!

We were very fortunate to receive our LOA after 82 days! This means we will be traveling to China soon to bring MingGe home!!!

Our LOA is being sent to us via overnight mail, we will sign and overnight back. It will go back to CCAA who will issue Travel Approval. TA usually takes 3-4 weeks. As soon as that is in hand we can request a consulate appointment. All travel arrangements will hinge upon the consulate appointment in Guangzhou.

As soon as I hung up with our agency I called John's cell. I can't believe it but he actually had it on and answered (this must be a sign). Even though I was crying I managed to get the words out and John was able to celebrate the news with the lunch bunch.

I sent a note to Elaine and Migyeong since it was the middle of the night. I also had to call Ali and my mother. Don't know Maria or Nick's numbers at work so they will have to wait until tonight. I also called Nana and Papa. Papa was skiing but Nana was thrilled to hear the news!!

I can't believe this is really happening. Thank you Lord!!!!
